Our good friend Tim Hutchinson is running the Rocky Raccoon 100 mile Race to raise money for Habitat for Hope! In 2008, Tim competed in the Florida Ironman Triathlon in Panama City and raised $65,000 – coming in 2nd in the Janus Charity Challenge. But way more importantly, we’ve become great friends, and there is nothing like a true friend that understands our calling and our work, and can take part in the work as his own. We are so blessed to have a 4000 square foot home on the HFH property that serves multiple families every day! The home was built in 1993 and quite a bit of maintenance comes with its “commercial” use. One of the biggest needs at the moment is to replace the roof shingles. The roof leaks every time it rains and has left many stains in the ceiling sheetrock. Recently we obtained 5 quotes from 5 different local roofing companies to tear off the old shingles and replace with new. The estimates ranged from $6400 to $8700. A little bit of sticker shock to say the least! In this process I remembered a construction contractor named Rick handing me a business card nearly two years ago who had said, “call me if you ever need anything.” This particular contractor attends church with former HFH family Matthew Jones and his family. The Jones’s sweet son David passed away from a kidney disorder 6 months after birth. So, I called Rick who told me to call Matthew. Long story short, Matthew was immediately struck by the opportunity to help out HFH and has put together a team from two churches, including a few professional roofers, to come and provide labor to install a new roof.

We have free labor, what about the materials? One of the biggest shingle and roofing material manufacturers is located right in Memphis. I had tried calling there to get through to a manager of some kind. I got forwarded to someone’s voicemail and never got a call back. So, I drove to the plant and walked right in. I ended up meeting the Senior Administrative Assistant who told me there was a really good chance we could receive a donation if I submitted something in writing. I went home, wrote up a proposal, and submitted.

Although we have not gotten word back yet on whether the material donation, you can certainly see God moving in this need, as He always does. Yes, we can still do ministry with some stains in the sheetrock; but stains turn to drips, and drips to floods of water. Keeping things in top shape means we can focus on offering a safe, clean place for lodging, and a comfortable environment for sharing living space with hurting families with critically ill kids. Even maintenance and property care is strongly interconnected to the overall ministry and work of HFH. On top of all this, it will be great to share this project with Matthew, Lindsay, and their perfectly healthy newest son Levi David Jones.

Foodie Memphis

Mark and I had the opportunity to join Chris and Sophorn McRae this week at Foodie Memphis. Chris has created a new concept for our area – a gathering for adults who love new restaurants and great food.

The idea is simple – patrons pay a set fee to dine together, feasting on a sampler menu of the restaurant’s best dishes. Personally, I loved not having to order my meal!

Foodie Memphis plans to sponsor a Habitat for Hope family at each gathering – offering this unique dining experience at no cost.

Thanks, Chris for a GREAT new concept in Memphis, and for your love of Habitat for Hope!

We are grateful that the Wolf River Conservancy included Habitat for Hope and LUVMUD 2010 in the “It’s Good to go Green!” festival last Saturday! It was gorgeous day, and we had a blast getting to know other friends and nonprofits in Memphis that are committed to conservation.

Taking part in the festival caused me to consider: what IS Habitat for Hope doing NOW to steward our resources and the environment and land we use?

Lead by Example

Recently we were awarded 5% Day at Whole Foods here in Memphis. Quarterly, the branches are given the chance to choose a nonprofit to award these collected proceeds. We applied to be selected, made it through round 1 of the selection process and were notified that we were invited to share our mission and vision along with 2 other local nonprofits. I arrived dressed in my typical blue jeans and blazer, and was surprised to find out that the meeting was OUTSIDE. Not only was it outside…I also discovered that the three presenting groups were speaking before the entire staff. I was immediately impressed with their inclusion of the whole staff – and thrilled when we learned the staff voted for Habitat for hope!

I stayed for a while to observe their meeting, and loved the way they built community among the staff and management, and created a fun, lively and encouraging environment. A few take-homes for me:

They were a multi-cultural and diverse group.
The energy was awesome – pre-meeting announcements shared about exciting news, giveaways that night, a hotdog eating competition, all while the band warmed up.
They CELEBRATED the new staff and gave them an opportunity on an open mic to share about themselves.
They CELEBRATED successes and achievements.
They have created a culture of ownership among their employees.
They empowered their staff by giving them the ability to choose where their charity dollars are given.
They made clear statements about the local branch of a major corporation impacting the Memphis community.
They did not talk about profit margins, sales reports, policies and failures.

We are honored to be Whole Foods’ charity of choice on September 14^th. Save up your monthly shopping for Tuesday, September 14^th and share in what promises to be a fun day at Whole Foods Poplar!

Habitat for Hope is unique in that all donated funds go directly to programs and services. Our staff members raise their support independently of the charity – which reduces our overhead cost to less than 5% of funds.

What can your donation provide?

$25 provides a fun toy, book or art supply gift to a child in the hospital

$40 provides a restaurant meal for a family of four

$100 provides gasoline for a family to drive 150 miles round trip for an appointment

$300 pays for a sponsorship to our yearly respite retreat for moms

$500 provides much-needed car care and rehab so families can transport safely

$1000 provides one month of free housing with included utilities in an apartment

$5000 can purchase a share in one of our new 1200 square foot homes that will be built on the HFH property

Pick our Costumes!

Tucker and Becky Davis and Mark and I are competing in an adventure race for Habitat for Hope this weekend in Nashville, TN! We are on relay teams and get to wear any possible costume. We would LOVE for you to help us meet our fundraising goal of $5000 – only $2,875 to go!
